About TTSPCA

A Brief History:

The Society was started in south
Trinidad in 1895 by a group of expatriates who were working with the oil companies and became affiliated with the RSPCA in 1936. We are now over 114 years in existence in Trinidad and Tobago.

In 1936 the Society was affiliated with the RSPCA (UK Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

British Governors were Patrons of the Society until we received Republican status and then presided over by Mathieu Perez, the then Chief Justice.

Until 1962 the Society was a Branch of the RSPCA and referred to as the RSPCA Overseas Associated Branch.

In the early 60's, Mr. Robert Johnson founded the Tobago Branch and the North Branch be
gan to operate kennels at
Tragarete Road, Port of Spain.

The Branches are governed by an Executive Council and there are currently three Branches operational, the largest being at our new premises at Mucurapo Lands, St James, Port of Spain.

The current Patron of the Society is President George Maxwell Richards, and our Society Chairman is Mr. Hubert Dolsingh.

Our Society President is Mrs. Sita Kuruvilla and our Operations Manager is Mrs. Sara Maynard-Agostini.

Operations:
The Society is an NGO dedicated to promoting animal welfare in T&T. The TTSPCA - Northern Branch is a temporary place for animals to live (our shelter is dedicated to the re-homing of un-wanted animals).

Our Capacity:
The TTSPCA - Northern Branch shelter has kennels for about 100 dogs. Some of the kennels are assigned to boarding dogs, some to dogs from the regional corporations, some for recovering veterinary patients, and the rest, the majority, are for dogs for adoption. The shelter also has 16 kennels for cats.

Statistics:
The TTSPCA - Northern Branch data shows a large increase in the number of animals relinquished to the northern branch over the last 4 years. In 2008 almost 8000 animals entered the shelter. They were either brought in by owners, or rescued from the streets, or removed from situations of neglect or cruelty. This is about 150 dogs and cats each week. In addition, four corporations brought in over 1700 dogs to the shelter.

Services Offered:

  • Spacious Boarding Kennels for both dogs and cats.
  • Low cost Spay and Neuter Clinic (When the vet is in).
  • Vaccination and Worming Services are also available (When the vet is in).
  • Humane Euthanasia.
  • Animal Ambulance - Pick up and delivery to and from our shelter.
